ES 2000
Activity #1: Create a poster to show an endangered species (the blue whale).
10 Facts:
1. Sea lion breeding grounds are known as rookeries
2. The eastern cougar may be extinct in Canada
3. Paleontologists estimate that up to 98% of all species that ever lived are now extinct
4. By far the greatest majority of known species are insects.
5. There are 10 species of birds bred in the San Diego Zoo that are part of re-introduction programs - young released back into their wild habitat
6. Many animal species have become extinct since the 1700s, among them the California grizzly bear, the dodo, and the passenger pigeon
7. Bison belong to the ox family because they have hoofs, horns, and chew their cud
8. Though the cheetah is a member of the cat family, it cannot retract, or pull in, its claws
9. The black-spotted, gold-colored coats help the cheetah camouflage against the grasses and plants of the grasslands
10. Cougar fur is soft and short, but those that live in northern regions have longer fur

How to help - Paragraph
I would like to
support captive breeding in zoos to increase the population numbers of species
that are in need by donating to zoos so they can continue to breed these
animals humanely and as naturally as possibly. I would also like to support
habitat preservation so that once the animals in captive breeding programs are
able to return to the wild, they have a habitat that is able to support them.
As well as supporting programs, I would like to spread the word to family and
friends so they can also support the conservation of endangered species.
Opinion
I believe what
ES2000 was trying to do was a good idea and could be very effective. They have
a lot of information on all sort of topics – why species are going extinct, how
you can help and information on the animals themselves. They also give examples
of other people’s stories and their experiences with endangered animals. For
these reasons, I believe the ES2000 website is very helpful and valuable.
